Advancement in the field of electronics is revolutionizing the automotive industry as these components play a vital role in practically every part of a vehicle, from the body to the powertrain to the infotainment system. That being said, consumers are constantly demanding for more innovative features from manufacturers such as advanced safety, security, infotainment, comfort features along with reasonable fuel economy standards. As such, semiconductor contents will grow across many different electronic modules and subsystems in the automotive industry.

However, a significant number of automotive dealers today are implementing legacy devices with limited functionality. Due to which the prospects of revenue through increased vehicle sales or return maintenance services seem bleak. The connected car solutions landscape has embarked to grow beyond just GPS and location functionality to cover broader telemetry possibilities by leveraging big analytics and machine learning. Actively advocating this enhancement of emerging technologies within automotive, Broadcom has established its market leadership with a gamut of robust and innovative solutions. The company is a leading provider of automotive semiconductor solutions addressing a wide range of needs, in-vehicle connectivity and networking, optical isolation and sensing, wireless communications, and LED lighting. Built on proven platforms combined with extensive product experience in automotive applications, Broadcom’s automotive solutions enable OEMs to bring innovative electronics to next-generation vehicles and enhance the overall driving experience and safety for the consumer. “As vehicles become increasingly advanced, Broadcom continues to spearhead high-speed Automotive Ethernet developments to support secure networks to proliferate new applications such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous driving,” states Ali Abaye, senior director of marketing for the Physical Layer Products Division at Broadcom

Disrupting the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry has witnessed unprecedented changes in the last two decades, driven heavily by the rapid adoption of in-vehicle electronics. Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced safety, security, infotainment, and a whole host of features for comfort and convenience to make driving easier, safer and more enjoyable.
As vehicles become increasingly advanced and connected, semiconductors will undoubtedly play an ever more critical role in the automotive ecosystem. The next several decades promise more semiconductor opportunities and challenges as new and emerging technologies are introduced to the automotive market. Numerous disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, V2X communications, and autonomous driving are starting to revolutionize the automotive industry. As auto manufacturers embrace digital disruption, Broadcom continues to drive innovation and develop new solutions to advance next-generation automotive electronics.

With the rapid adoption of in-vehicle electronics and increasing bandwidth demands from data-intensive applications, Gigabit Ethernet is quickly becoming the de-facto networking technology for supporting high-bandwidth communications in automotive applications. As vehicles become increasingly connected, Gigabit Ethernet PHYs and multilayer Ethernet switches are essential in handling the increased data traffic while being able to transfer large amounts of critical data across the network for accurate real-time decision making.

"With the availability of Broadcom’s industry-leading secure multilayer switch and Gigabit PHY, automotive manufacturers can now design and build a plethora of Gigabit Ethernet systems to address high-speed secure networking applications"

Broadcom has been at the forefront of the wireless revolution and leads the trade in technical innovation across several wireless disciplines. From advanced RF front end parts to leading-edge GNSS receivers, the company offers an innovative wireless portfolio addressing several of today’s major challenges for automotive applications. “With the availability of Broadcom’s industry-leading secure multilayer switch and Gigabit PHY, automotive manufacturers can now design and build a plethora of Gigabit Ethernet systems to address high-speed secure networking applications,” explains Abaye.

The Industry’s First 1000BASE-T1 PHY

Broadcom offers the industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of copper PHY transceivers for the automotive market. These PHYs support 100M and 1000M transmission rates and compatible with the BroadR-Reach platform, IEEE 100BASE-T1, 100BASE-Tx, 1000BASE-T1 standards. This industry-leading, comprehensive PHY portfolio offers integration of features at low power and allows customers to design cost-effective solutions for in-vehicle networking applications. The PHY portfolio offers customers a pin-to-pin compatible solution and provides the flexibility in design qualification effort.
The BCM8988X is the industry’s first 1000BASE-T1 PHY. BCM8988X performs all of the physical layer (PHY) functions for 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 10BASE-T Ethernet packets over copper wire, like FlexRay™. The 10BASE-T may also run on standard categories 3, 4, and 5 UTP. The BCM89610 is intended to exceed automotive specifications for noise cancellation and transmission interference, providing consistent and reliable operation over a vast range of existing cable plants. The device is based on Broadcom's digital-signal processor technology that combines digital adaptative equalizers, ADCs, phase-locked loops, line drivers, encoders, decoders, echo cancelers, and other devices that require the support circuitry. The BCM8988X is compliant with RGMII and MII interface specifications, permitting industry-standard Ethernet media access controllers (MACs) and switch controllers compatibility.

Designed for reliable operation over worst-case Category 5 cable plants, the BCM8988X delivers the comprehensive automotive technology solutions required by OEM and Tier 1 suppliers, meeting certifications such as CISPR 25 component-level, ISO 11452-5 Stripline, ISO 11452- 4, IEC 61000-4-2, AEC-Q100, and Grade 1 temperature range. The device automatically connects with its link partner to determine the highest possible operating speed. BCM8988x detects and corrects common wiring problems and polarity automatically. The Specific architectural and design enhancements of the BCM8988X are utilized to increase design for test, reliability, and quality in order to surpass AECQ100 and EMC requirements. Despite, the small size footprint with a 48-pin MLP package, the device is designed to support IEEE 1588 timing function.
